James Rodger's BIM/IPD Thesis Reflection |
|
Participating in IPD/BIM thesis was a great experience. Participating in a thesis that brings all four AE disciplines together thought me much more about the other fields and allowed me to get an early experience at collaboration and real word constraints. I feel that after this thesis I have a much great appreciation for the work my teammates do in their respective fields. This thesis allowed me to both learn about BIM technologies as well as full buildings integration.
As a team we soon realized it was important that we align our goals and develop ways to effectively communicate. It was essential that we communicate a design as a team and not just in our own individual disciples. By doing so we were able to deliver a high quality product that was both on budget and on schedule. We also found that was crucial to manage our information and file in an efficient and effective manner.
I believe that the IPD/BIM thesis will prove to have been an invaluable part of my education here as a Penn State AE student. I believe that the skills learned in this thesis will benefit me greatly in my career. Although it is a pilot program and is by no means flawless, It was a great alternative to the traditional thesis.
I would like to thank all those who have assisted and supported me this past year as I completed my senior thesis. I would like to thank my team HPR Integrated Design, my fellow students, my professors and advisors, my family, the project team, the construction management team, and all others who assisted me and HPR with this senior thesis. |

The Capstone Project Electronic Portfolio (CPEP) is a web‐based project and information center. It
contains material produced for a year‐long Senior Thesis class. Its purpose, in addition to providing
central storage of individual assignments, is to foster communication and collaboration between
student, faculty consultant, course instructors, and industry consultants. This website is dedicated to
the research and analysis conducted via guidelines provided by the Department of Architectural
Engineering. For an explanation of this capstone design course and its requirements click here. |

Note: While great efforts have been taken to provide accurate and complete information on the pages of CPEP, please be aware that the information contained herewith is considered a work-in-progress for this thesis project. Modifications and changes related to the original building designs and construction methodologies for this senior thesis project are solely the interpretation of this BIM/IPD group. Changes and discrepancies in no way imply that the original design contained errors or was flawed. Differing assumptions, code references, requirements, and methodologies have been incorporated into this thesis project; therefore, investigation results may vary from the original design. |
